History of The Barn

The Barn at Ivy House Farm was converted into luxury, self-catering holiday cottage accommodation in 2005 after a year long renovation of what was a derelict hay barn. The original farmhouse dates to 1742, however it's pretty clear that the barn was a later addition, possibly Victorian. Originally a hay barn, later uses included a dairy and more recently, a stable for pygmy goats. A particularly bad storm in the winter of 2003 holed the roof and made renovation a necessity if the whole structure wasn't to collapse. A holiday cottage seemed to be the best option as residential conversions tend to be frowned upon by The Peak District National Park Authority.

The conversion

In converting the barn, we strove to create a light, contemporary living space, making the most of the views by having an open plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen on the first floor with bedrooms on the ground floor making them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The holiday cottage has solid oak and slate flooring throughout, making it ideal for those of you with allergies to the dust mites found in fitted carpets - it also makes it a lot easier for us to clean!

We decided to forfeit some bedroom storage space in lieu of en-suite shower rooms for the two double bedrooms. Feedback from guests suggests that this was the right thing to do alongside the full-size family bathroom with bath.

We do hope that you decide to book your break with us and guarantee that you'll enjoy a comfortable stay.
