Max's Indian Restaurant In Bakewell
Max’s Indian Restaurant in Bakewell is on Bridge Street, just over the bridge on the left, if you’re coming in along the A619 from Baslow.
The imposing Georgian stone building seems an unlikely venue for an indian restaurant and it would be easy to walk past without noticing it.
Inside, the dining room is rather dark and drab with little decoration and a somewhat tired feel – an aspidistra wouldn’t have looked out of place.
The waiting staff were pleasant and the menu had a wide range of indian dishes but once ordered, the main courses took an age to arrive.
The restaurant wasn’t especially busy but we discovered later that the cooking is all done by one man, which goes some way to explaining the delay.
The real surprise was the quality of the food – it was truly delicious.
There’s a tendancy in market town Indian restaurants to go for the lowest common denominator, serving over dyed, too hot or too sweet curries to inebriated revellers.
Max’s is different.
The food is more of the standard you would expect of a “boutique” Indian restaurant in a large city – great flavours, full of subtle ingredients and beautfully cooked. We had a range of dishes and every one was superb.
Price-wise, Max’s represents great value so if you’re looking for a good Indian restaurant, while staying at The Barn, Bakewell is only 20 minutes away – try it out!
Unfortunately, Max’s doesn’t seem to have a website so here’s the address, phone number and map from Google:
