The Druid Inn, Birchover

The Druid Inn in Birchover is a family run “gastro-pub” just 20 minutes away from the Barn.

It may seem like a bit of a hike, but it really is worth the effort .

It’s always hard to find somewhere which offers good quality food for adults and yet caters to the less developed palates of children, but The Druid Inn does exactly that.

We started with “nibbles”, a basket of lovely ciabatta with olives and dips and truly delicious baked sweet potato wedges with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.

The nibbles were so tasty, we ate the lot – it’s a good job we didn’t order starters too or we’d never have made it through the main course!

The kids chose a burger and chips and pizza and chips from the comprehensive children’s menu and we had an adult burger and chips and a mushroom risotto.

The burgers were properly made, succulent and full of flavour – we’re not talking about the rubbery ice hockey pucks you normally get in a pub, this is real food made with skill and love.

The risotto was perfectly cooked too and the portions were all generous at a price that’s incredibly reasonable.

Defeated by the first two courses, the adults opted out of dessert, but the kids both had sticky toffee puddings which they declared to be the finest puddings they had ever eaten!

The service was impeccable with really friendly staff and co-owner Eric, made us very welcome indeed – I will be recommending this pub to everyone.

The Druid Inn is really easy to find and there are some fabulous walks in the area, one of which starts and finishes opposite the pub.

If you’re in the area, the nearby village of Winster is worth a visit too, with it’s quaint three storey stone houses making it look more like a small Georgian town than a village.
