A quiet month

Pete and the team were away working on other jobs for most of the month, returning in the last week of August to prepare for the groundworks proper.

Work started with removal of the concrete floor within the barn. This was a worrying time because, as the floor was broken up, it became apparent that the whole barn was sitting, without foundations, on the solid clay sub-soil. We had to pray for a cool, damp period while the sub-soil was exposed, to minimise the chance of drying out, cracking and subsequent movement of the walls.

How did you say this thing works, Pete?

The floor being extracted

Once the barn floor had been removed, a couple of days of trench digging, pipe laying and back filling ensued. Needless to say, the site became an absolute quagmire and we were lucky to miss the worst of it by going away on holiday to Devon.
